How it's made

Shells are collected and fashioned by hand into very small discs about 3–5mm in diameter. A hole is drilled in the centre and the discs are threaded on nylon (traditionally bush twine) to form strands. Different coloured shells have different values — red-orange shells are the most expensive because they need to be baked to achieve their colour. A single necklace can take weeks to produce.
